LACOE Green Schools Initiative Charitable Fund

About the Fund

Climate change disproportionately affects communities of color and low-income communities in both rural and urban areas. The education sector has a critical role to play in advancing climate action and building a more sustainable future. Schools are uniquely positioned to reduce their environmental impact, strengthen climate resilience, and promote equity—all while preparing the next generation of environmental leaders.

Through the Green Schools Initiative, LACOE supports sustainable practices and environmental education within its own operations and across all 80 school districts in Los Angeles County. This fund helps advance that mission by providing the resources schools need to take meaningful, climate-focused action.

The Impact

Green Schools create healthier, more supportive learning environments that lead to measurable benefits for students, staff, and entire school communities. Research shows that sustainable school practices can reduce absenteeism and ease mental health challenges—both of which contribute to improved student achievement and increased district funding levels. Key areas of impact include direct student support, professional development for educators, and targeted assistance for local education agencies (LEAs). By investing in Green Schools, we’re not just protecting the planet—we’re also creating stronger, more resilient educational communities.

Your Support in Action

This fund supports the implementation of LACOE’s Environmental Sustainability Action Plan by advancing programs that promote climate action across Los Angeles County schools. A primary goal is to raise $750,000 to establish a dedicated Office of Sustainability that will lead and coordinate environmental efforts countywide. Your support also helps make events like the Green Schools Symposium possible—a leadership forum that brings together administrators, educators, and industry partners from all 80 school districts and 350 charter schools. Together, these efforts are laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future in education.
